Passengers Upset After Ship Rerouted

An Australian couple is among eight cruise passengers left stranded in West Africa without money after their ship was rerouted due to a medical emergency.

The Norwegian Cruise Line ship, the Norwegian Gem, was scheduled to dock in Dakar, Senegal, on Friday, but was diverted to the Cape Verde Islands after a passenger suffered a heart attack.

The passengers were told they would be able to disembark in Cape Verde and fly home, but they were then told that there were no flights available.

The passengers have been left stranded with no money and no way to get home.

A mother from Massachusetts spoke exclusively to ABC News after her 12-year-old son was left stranded in Cape Verde.

"I'm just so worried about him," she said. "He's only 12 years old and he's all alone in a foreign country."

The man, in his 50s, was last seen swimming at Bondi Beach on Saturday.

A search operation was launched on Sunday, involving police, the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter, and Surf Life Saving NSW.

The body was found on Monday morning.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
