Edward VIII: A King Who Reigned for Less Than a Year
Early Life and Family
Edward VIII, born David, was the eldest son of King George V and Queen Mary. He was born on June 23, 1894, in White Lodge, Richmond Park, London.
Reign and Abdication
Edward became king upon the death of his father in 1936. However, his reign was short-lived. In December 1936, he abdicated the throne to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee. The abdication caused a constitutional crisis and a public outcry.
